Design
My design work encompasses books of various shapes and sizes; publicity material such as leaflets, posters and brochures; exhibitions; logos and corporate identity; and design for electronic resources.
Sometimes my method of making images and my research interests spill over into my design work, when graphic design work adopts the techniques that I employ in the making of images for exhibitions and installations. Parts of images are often recycled and find new contexts, carrying something of their original meaning as they travel. Similarly, the techniques of graphic design and illustration sometimes become part of my fine art image-making process.
Other aspects of my design work include the creation of illustrations such as maps and diagrams for academic works.
The ability to design my own books has enabled me to develop new books published under my imprint Sulien Books, where I have enjoyed the potential of drawing on my own photographic and image archive for the creation of richly illustrated books.
Numerous examples of the range of my design work over the last fifteen years or so may be found in the design archive pages. The archive is grouped in three sections: books (design, covers, illustration), print (exhibition, heritage interpretation, promotional literature) and logo design.
