Tide Line, River Usk, detail, 2007 |
The theme of the River Usk was chosen for the 2007 Diverse Manners group exhibition at the Newport Riverfront Arts Centre, which is located in the town centre overlooking the river. The exhibition took its title, Muddy Magnificence, from a poem by Goff Morgan, celebrating the tidal rise and fall of the river, and the mud banks visible at low tide. The River Usk divides and unites the centre of Newport, the rising and falling tide spanned six times by bridges constructed during the last 120 years. The changing landscape of demolition and construction goes on while the receding tide leaves behind fresh contours and deposits in the mud.

A series of photographic works were created for the exhibition, including images of the bridges that cross the Usk and the patterns left in the mud by the tide. A video piece, projected onto a large screen in the basement of the Arts Centre, illustrated the movement of the water under the town bridge with reflections of the traffic, trains and gulls. |
